Fundamentals of First Aid

The basic steps to responding to an emergency are as follows:

Primary scence survey: check the scence for hazards and determine the mechanism of injury
Check the casualty's level of consciousness
Primary survey: check ABC's - airway, breathing, circulation
Call EMS
Provide first aid for life-threatening problems
Secondary survey: check casualty for other problems and treat appropriately
Monitor and casualty's condition, especially breathing and circulation
Help casualty rest in most comfortable position and reassure
