Introduction

Western blots used to detect antibodies against pathogens depend on prepared pathogenic proteins that are run through the gel. A patient's serum is used as a primary antibody, with anti-human secondary antibodies used as detection.

This identifies a pattern of serum antibodies, as compared with only one antibody being detected in an EIA/OIA. As such Western blotting is more specific.
