Total Parental Nutrition

Total Parental Nutrition (TPN) is a method of feeding intravenously, avoiding the gut. It is used in situations where patients cannot tolerate oral intake, cannot adequately absorb nutrition, or need gut rest to recover.

Indications for TPN

TPN Constituents

Ursodiol (ursodeoxycholic acid) is a hydrophilic bile acid which enables bile flow.

A rapid drop in TPN wil lead to hypoglycemia, as high dextrose levels will lead to hyperinsulinemia. A slow taper up or down is necessary

Complications

overfeeding

no food

sepsis
