Introduction

Be patient

inform the patient of what you are avbout to do

give clear instructions

give the person time and space to perform the movement

don't tug or pull on a patient's arm

use a transfer belt, or hold onto trousers

be careful of IVs, catheters, and other lines

when in doubt, get help!

Moving Up in Bed

Place a draw sheet or soaker under the patient.

Raise bed to a good height and lay patient flat

Have one person on either side of the bed

Two options

ask patient to bend knees and help by pushing with their feet

coordinate movement

shift weight from one leg to another

keep tension in soaker pad

 

 

 

Log Rolling

Have bed flat and leave top rail up

Bend both knees

place one hand on shoulder and one hand on hip

ask patient to assist by pulling on bedrail

count 1,2,3 with patient

roll in one movement

 

 

Sitting Up in Bed

Ensure patient is moved up (see above)

Lift head of bed

Place 1-2 hands on scapula

Ask for patient's help by pushing on bed or pulling on handrail

count 1,2,3 with patient

Move patient forward

 

Lying to Sitting

Log roll onto side

Drop legs over edge of bed

Ask patient to help by pushing with elbow and hand; if unable, place one hand on deltoid area

Life patient up as legs are dropped over edge of bed

 

 

Sitting to Standing

Begin with feet on floor, feet under patient

Patient at edge of chair

Nose over their toes

One hand holding that of patient, another at small of back or under ischial tuberosity

Patient with other hand on armrest; Do not allow patient to pull on walking aid

1,2,3 while rocking to gain momentum

Stand up, with support at base of sacrum and through hand

Guide patient's hand to walking aid
