Biophysical Profile

The biophysical profile (BPP) is an ultrasound-based assessment of fetal health over 30 minutes. It measures five parameters, each scored from 0-2: fetal tone, breathing, movement, amniotic fluid volume, and a non-stress test (NST).

score of 8-10 is considered healthy
score of 5-6 is potentially worrying, and would warrant delivery in a term fetus
score of 0-4 is very worrying and suggests hypoxia. Immediate delivery should be strongly considered.

amniotic fluid volume: fluid pocket of 2x2 cm

breathing: at least one episode of breathing lasting 30 seconds

limb movement: three discrete movements

fetal tone: ate least one episode of limb extension and then flexion
